Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry
Oral and maxillofacial surgery is an area of medicine that includes the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases, injuries, defects and malformations, both functional and aesthetic, of the jaws and adjacent regions, such as the neck or skull.
Our team is led by maxillofacial surgeon Manuel Chamorro Pons, and treats:
- Facial trauma problems.
- Head and neck oncology.
- Reconstructive surgery.
- Salivary gland pathology, such as benign and malignant tumours or calculi.
- Craniofacial deformities: from mild dentofacial anomalies to major malformation syndromes.
- Facial aesthetics: facelift, blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty, etc.
- Cervicofacial infectious pathology (phlegmons or abscesses of the face and neck).
- Oral implantology: placement and rehabilitation of osseointegrated dental implants.
- Minor oral pathology such as third molars (wisdom teeth) or canines (fangs), buccomaxillofacial cysts, and pathology of the oral mucosa and temporomandibular joint (craniomandibular dysfunction).
The speciality covers a wide range of procedures such as the extraction of teeth that can no longer be restored or retained teeth such as wisdom teeth or canines.
Featured treatments
Face trauma
The surgeon fixes trauma injuries to the maxillofacial region. Mainly fractures of the jaws, orbits and the rest of the facial bones.
Oral and maxillary pathology and injuries
Treats infectious lesions affecting the maxillary bones, and cysts and benign or malignant neoplasms which can modify the architecture of the bones and associated teeth, as they can sometimes present complications during their evolution. For example, they can spread to adjacent areas or cause infections.
Facial pain and temporomandibular joint disorders
Temporomandibular joint and muscle disorders (TMJ disorders) are usually painful problems of the chewing muscles and joints that connect the lower jaw to the skull. Surgery is considered when persistent localised pain in the joint limits mobility and is associated with specific structural changes and when all other conservative treatments have failed. At present, we offer arthroscopic TMJ surgery, a minimally invasive technique that can solve many of the major problems of these joints.
Correction of dentofacial disharmony and congenital defects
The maxillofacial surgeon, in collaboration with the orthodontist, corrects jaw alignment and malposition problems to solve alterations in bite function and facial appearance. They also perform surgical correction of congenital defects such as cleft lip and palate.
Aesthetic facial surgery
Given that all their work focuses on the facial region, oral and maxillofacial surgeons are very familiar with facial anatomy and are therefore highly qualified to perform cosmetic surgery procedures such as blepharoplasty, otoplasty, mentoplasty, rhinoplasty or cervical facelift.
Dental implants
In collaboration with the dental technician, the surgeon studies, plans and places the implants that will replace the missing teeth. They also reconstruct the alveolar bone in order to place the implants, a procedure that requires minor surgery, at the least.
Maxillofacial infections
Management of oral and maxillofacial infectious processes of dental origin and/or any other type.
Treatment of sleep apnoea
Underlying many cases of sleep apnoea is poor jaw development leading to a narrowing of the airway. Patients are initially treated with CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) oxygen injectors, which in many cases are not well tolerated. The maxillofacial surgeon studies these cases by taking precise measurements of the airway and the position of the jaws. In most cases, surgery can solve the situation.
